Before you act: there’s no point in writing comments like: Where’s the zip file? I want the zip file. Can you please send me the zip file?
well well… What can I say? Several people have sent me links to this and other similar news reports, concerned about what is going to happen to dylanchords.
I understand the concern — I share it, and I don’t know what’s going to happen.
On the one hand: I don’t want to go to jail, and I can’t afford a 500,000$ lawsuit. Those are two good reasons to shut down the site right now.
On the other, I keep telling myself that I don’t have much to worry about: all the lyrics are already freely available from bobdylan.com; all the tabs are my own interpretations and “intellectual property” in some sense of the word, I haven’t copied them from anywhere, and god knows I haven’t cast so much as an eye on the official chord books — heaven forbid! (in fact, had the publishers done a decent job on those, I would never have started this site); to my knowledge, chord charts in the form and with the contents you will find on dylanchords.com have not been copyrighted; etc. All in all, if I were the judge, I couldn’t really say that the site is much of an infringement.
Then again, I ain’t the judge.
The Australian Copyright Council writes:
If you own copyright in a musical work or lyrics, you are generally the only person who can:
- reproduce it: for example, by recording a performance of it, photocopying it, copying it by hand, or scanning it onto a computer disk;
- make it public for the first time;
- perform it in public;
- communicate it to the public (including via radio, television and the internet);
- translate it (for lyrics); or
- arrange or transcribe it (for music).
That would mean that I would need Dylan’s permission to arrange the songs, even though the “arrangements” (i.e. tabs) are my own.
However:
Unless a special exception applies, copyright is infringed if someone uses copyright material in one of the ways set out in the Copyright Act without the copyright owners permission. The special exceptions include fair dealing with copyright material for research or study, or for criticism or review.
The disclaimer about “research, study, personal use” etc. is a standard mantra in headers of tab pages, which I’ve never really taken seriously, and I doubt that anyone has — especially not the publishers and copyright holders. Whether or not a use is fair depends on four factors, listed in the US Copyright Act:
• the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;
• the nature of the copyright work;
• the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyright work as a whole; and
• the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.
I’d say I score a point on #1, but I lose on the other three.
All in all, the situation is too unclear for me to see through it, but also to just sit and wait. I have therefore decided — actually while writing this — to take down the potentially offensive parts of the site until the situation has become clearer. There will be a solution, I’m sure, but until then: have patience! This is not a goodbye, but a “We’ll meet again”

This is a travesty. First, I think you are more covered than a regular tablature site, because a) this was your work, b) you’reanot a professional, c) you include a fair aamount of criticism and commentary on the transcriptions. This is fair use! If anything, I’ d say, include more commentary/criticism and you should be completely fair game.

These are exactly the kind of things that I want to investigate further, and I also believe that they wouldn’t come after me first, but should they do, I’d rather be prepared. I’m not as confident as you about the fair use, though. A colleague of mine was prohibited from using some song title (can’t remember which one) as a chapter heading in one of his books… Besides, if I’d have to include commentary and criticism for every song, I wouldn’t have time for much else…
But I’m not a lawyer, and if you are, you are more than welcome to give me advice :-)

Oh, boy. Life could be some much easier…
Anyway, what could be the worst case we can think of? I’d say: That this site has to be down forever. But even this isn’t the end of playing Dylan songs, becourse:
• Dylan is 65-something. This site covers nearly all material he has done so far, and I’m sure many people have downloaded the zip Archive and are willing to distribute it. (Many thank to Eyolf here: He has not only tabbed all the stuff, he has also made it easily available. We owe him much!)
• Whatever Dylan releases in the future, I’m sure there will be means to distribute the tabs on that, too. Ever heard of DeCSS?
Having said that, just one more thing: The whole argumentation is ridiculous. I’m as right-winged as any sane man can be(*), but this is just power & greed & curruptable seed.
(*) Possibly. But who wouldn’t say that about himself, however left-winged he is?

Though I can understand your motives, it’s still a very big shame it has to be like this. I believe there are two options left. You could send me the entire archive, or we can torch the MPA headquarters. Either way, I’d like to compliment you on the tabs, and thank you for the time I *have* been able to use it. I must say I’ve learned a lot through playing Dylan :)

Listen man, I think this has been a great service to musicians and appeciators of Dylan’s music. I thank you for all the work you put into it.
However, to think that the arrangements are your “intellectual property” is way off the mark.

I can’t believe this. i’ve been learning songs on the guitar for almost ten years now – it’s practically how i tought myself and progress as a guitar player. i have dylanchords on my favorites and have visited it at least five times a week ever since i found it. it has been a staple on my computer and chalenges google as my other homepage option. i’m truly heartbroken that i won’t be able to look up any more songs by dylan. i’ll have to resort to the old brick and mortar method that i used when i was 16 looking up sublime songs.
well…to sum up how i feel: i just got off a long days work and i’ve been humming shelter from the storm in my head all day. guess i’ll have to play it from memory from now on, which might not be a bad thing after all.
get this chords back up as soon as you can. and while you’re at it, throw on the band songs from the basement tapes or give us a link to find them.

That depends on the definiton one uses. Granted, as “A product of the intellect that has commercial value, including copyrighted property such as literary or artistic works, and ideational property, such as patents, appellations of origin, business methods, and industrial processes,” it’s not, but as “Any intangible asset that consists of human knowledge and ideas,” I’d say it is.
The most common usage seems to be as an umbrella concept to cover copyrights and patents, and according to that definition, you’re probably right. I like to consider the site as a whole, though.

I am stunned to see the grisley aftermath of the latest chapter of the buisnessman’s war on music culture. What’s next? Is Dylan’s record company going to start sueing performers for playing his songs? Maybe Dylan should start paying his overdue back payments to Woody Guthrie’s estate. Does you know Dylan’s opinion on this?

This is absolutely ridiculous. Going on about protecting the artist. just today, I read that Paul and Ringo and Harrison and Lennons family’s were left with no recourse but to sue EMI for unrecived royalities. Anyway, I hope you will be able to report your site. I spent much time here and found your tabs excellent. I too would be interested in a zip file if at all possible.

About the zip archive: Right now it’s still were it used to be; it’s place isn’t hard to guess if you know that the name of the file is chords.zip.

This has been the number one source I used when I started playing the guitar four years ago. In fact, until last year it was the only source, and I think it’s fair to say that 90% of what I learned is from this site: From strumming the Am chord to playing “Simple twist of fate” in open D/E tuning. (with the sensation of sounding “just like the record”. I think it was the only song I played for weeks.) And now it’s gone! :-((

Like many others, I’ve been in this site hundreds (thousands!) of times.
Since I started playing guitar some years ago, this has been my favourite place for all these things. Not only for the tabs, I’ve slept with “roadmaps for the soul” under my pillow for quite some time. Now most of this is gone, and it’s a real shame.
I don’t want to get political, I don’t want to say that this whole thing is completely stupid, that we’re getting into 1984 at an incredible speed, that I’m not sure anymore if we will win this battle. Well, I just said so.
Fortunately, we still have this incredible piece of work in the form of zip files that are free out there. And it’d be great if a version updated 15-dec would appear somewhere (hint hint).
Thanks again Eyolf. You just can’t imagine what all this means to me, but I guess I can’t imagine what it means to you either.

i just finished a media law class and had an exam question almost identical to what you’re going through here

the courts look at all four categories as a whole and you really have them all covered well, except the amount used. -so you’re good there
and the disclaimer -You may only use this file for private study, scholarship, or research. -is an excellent defense

I’d gladly listen to your arguments (and thanks to all you lawyers and law students who have offered me your assistance :-), but I want to be certain first. As I see it, #1 is my point, #2 is fairly unclear, but if “the nature of the copyright work” means “copyrighted music”, it is my impression that that is rather strongly protected — especially these days, in response to the mp3 trading and such, and the “threat” that the internet poses to the music industry in general. (And, I should add, rightly so, in some respects: I welcome every legal effort to give struggling artists the right to an outcome of their work. That said, the music industry has never worked to the benefit of struggling artists….)
#3 is an outright lose for me, and I think I would have a hard time defending myself on #4; there is a quite substantial number of downloaded pages every day, and whereas it is my hope that my site may have contributed to the overall value of Dylan’s work by making it more accessible, perhaps also enticing people to buy albums they might otherwise not have bought, it may still have had a negative effect on the market, at least for (crappy) song books.

This is terrible! I have been a constant visitor to your web site and I must say you have created the best tab page ever. The thought that you can be persecuted for spreading music through interpretive means is terrible. I feel crushed, could some one send me the zip of all the tabs?

This site has been a tremendous help to me over it’s lifetime – and I can not thank the webmaster enough for all of his efforts over the years. I would never have learned to play guitar without him and this site.
I found _an_ archive from the site (although it is back from Sept, 2001), and will e-mail it to everyone who listed their e-mail address in these comments prior to my comment. The MPA can sue me all they want, I’m a bartender at a millionaire’s golf club surrounded by lawyers.

This site should never be shunned. The chords are indeed accurate but they are not copied from exact copies. It is pointless to do this with Bob Dylan music anyway, since each musician who plays it will have a completely unique interpretation, whether he/she likes it or not. I also agree about the lyrics. The lyrics are poetry! I am certain Bob would like his words to be represented accurately. Well, we can’t help the idiots of the law. But it’s a dying shame if this site is shut down.

To find the zip file everyone is looking for (I’ll just call it “X”) in a version from November 2003: search for “X” to find the exact previous location. Then search for “Wayback Machine” to find a very cool site that stores old web pages intact. Then search for X there and you will find it.

You must NOT be cowed and shrink merely from fear, allowing your emotions to direct your thoughts, acting because of vague questions instead of clear answers.
You don’t have anything to fear from the music companies. Why do you think they are after you?
You have seen the legal arguments (above) and someone even recommended talking to Bobs lawyer, but has anyone asked you to retract what you had published? Which, by the way, is only commentary. That’s all you’ve ever published, really, is commentary. The specific tabs themselves were only presenting the context, in a very scholarly way, for the commentary, somewhat like footnotes at the bottom of the page or the back of the book.
Furthermore, Dylan is in the public domain. He is, his songs are, and even more so his voice shimmers and glistens off the face of humanity, the ultimate public domain. And he wants it, why shouldn’t he? Why wouldn’t he? Everytime we say something to someone about him, he grows. Everytime another book is written, he leaves his mark a little deeper, a little longer.
Sometimes I go into Bethesda and stand there with my D-41 and softly raise my voice little by little through the verses of She Belongs To Me, and then every verse of Desolation Row, Visions of Johanna, maybe Don’t Think Twice, or The Wedding Song, or Tangled Up In Blue. I do it as a tribute. I do it because I want his songs heard. I do it for the sheer joy of singing the songs. You promote that, worldwide. That’s a good thing.
By the way, so far nobody’s even thought of arresting me.
And nobody has thought of arresting you, either. Anyway, they would ask you to take it down, if they cared. They don’t.
Publish your stuff if you want to, don’t if you don’t. But don’t NOT publish it because of some fear of the unknown.

What a blow to see that all the tabs have been removed from this truely remarkable site. Considering all the crap out there, this is one of the sites that could justify the existence of the internet. The amount of work an dedication that has been put into this is just unbelievable. I have listened to dylan forever, but using this site over the passed few years, has really lifted my journey into the dylan universe. It´s interesting to realize that by attempting to perform the songs and understand how they were originally played, you get deeper into the songs.

eyolf, as a lawyer I can tell you that if you are based in sweden you will be goverened by Sweedish I.P. law and not US or Australian I.P. law. And this guitar tabs lark is a different kettle of fish from MP3 sites. I think if swedish law had a fair use exemption this site would be covered.

This is an absolutely ridiculous series of points made by the MPA, sadly this was one of the 2 guitar tab sites that was still around, only one remains to my knowledge and it wont last long.

As a former professional musician, and someone who has spent untold thousands of dollars buying records, tapes and CD’s, I respect and honor copyright. A hard-working songwriter deserves to be reimbursed for his/her hard work and personal struggles which lead to the creation of their music. However, I can’t see how reproducing lyrics and chords online is in violation of this reward since anyone with a modicum of skills can copy down lyrics as they listen to recorded music and easily figure out the chord structure. Websites such as yours simply streamlines the process for the millions of amateur musicians who perform only for themselves and a few friends or family. In fact, I’d argue, that reproducing lyrics and chords of libraries such as Dylan’s encourages those who don’t have a particular recording to go out and buy it, thus contributing to recording sales. I’ve done this myself with Dylan’s and many other songwriters material that I may have heard once or twice, found the lyrics online, and then bought the CD to listen to the original performance. To shut down or go after websites such as yours is ridiculous.

You have to be kidding me dude. This is like my favourite site on the internet. If someone has a newer zip archive (I have the old one, but does that cover all of the songs and the updates? I dunno) i want the site exactly how it was before it was shutdown, heh.

It’s a shame that it came to this, Mr. Ostrem, but I understand where you’re coming from. I barely escaped an RIAA subpoena a few months back (They told my ISP they would subpoena, and never followed up). Your site is beyond fantastic — I can really say I learned much or most of what I know about rock/pop harmony from your tabs.

IT was a free, cool site. But apparently freedom is getting hard to maintain when it is not constrained by the boundaries of the market. I’m not really politically comitted, but i just have the feeling that something’s happening here. Internet is one of the last place that is not fully shaped by economic dictatorship. It looks like it’s getting there.
Anyway, I managed to get the zip file and I think it is a good initiative to pass it around to maintain some freedom if possible.

I’ve been pratically living at this website for the past year or so. It is very sad to see this happen. I hope in the end you will be able to open it back up especially since you’re not selling ads here.

From what I’ve heard, foggy is no longer in charge of dylan.com, so writing to him won’t help. At the moment, it’s a matter of checking the options, and “be patient”. Should there eventually be a need for testimonials, petitions, and directed mails, I’ll keep you informed here.

As a musician I have found this site to be very enlightenining. As a Dylan fan I have found this site to be invaluable.

I’m shocked and deeply saddened. This site was truly one of the best music resources I have ever come across–not merely for your transcriptions, but for your analysis of Dylan’s style, bits of music theory, and meticulous cataloguing of even his rarest tunes and the background behind them.
Please don’t let this site die. It was (and is) an incredible achievement, and certainly does not harm Dylan or the record companies in any way.

It was a Sad Sad Day to find dylanchords.com shut down today. It really threw me into a panic until I could get my hands on the “Zip” file. Does the fact that the music you present on the site has no bearing to the music presented in the Dylan songbooks available protect the work in anyway.
Obviously transferring the tabs from the song books would be a problem. But if you look at most of the songs they’re quite different, and the case seemed to be against accurate reproductions. Not that the site isn’t accurate, but the books are the official righted form and so surely the site’s work is a creative interpretation.

Yes, but… There are copyrights on several different layers here. The publishers hold the right to the versions they publish, but Dylan holds the rights to the artistic creation, and is entitled to control the publication of arrangements and transcriptions of it.
Thus, I would have the copyright of any such arrangement or transcription, but in order for me to be allowed to publish it in the first place, I would need Dylan’s permission.

What a shame…I too refer to the site most days, it has helped me hugely with learning the guitar.
If the ‘official’ music books showed the songs in such accurate detail as this site I would not hesitate to buy it/them (actually I have bought one and been totally disappointed so don’t intend to buy any more).
Good luck with the site, I’m sure there will be a way around this nonsense…
BTW does a version of chords.zip exist which is newer than Dec 19th 2003?

Power to the people! I use this site everyday for all my Dylan tunes. I’m sick of all these money-mongering corporations cracking down on homegrown websites, bands, and people just to add to their piles.

This is probablly the best tab site I’ve ever been to. It is what made it possible for me to start playing harmonica with NO lessons what so ever. It showed me keys, scales, and actual acurate tabalture and lyrics. And this is ridiculous for them to want to shut your site or any other’s down. I sincerely hope you stay up!! I have a show coming up Dec. 31st and some of your intereptations made it possible. Keep up the fight! Sam.

Update, upon second thought (and some more reading): I think it’s fair to say that the tabs (being arrangements) are my intellectual property, but formally, in order to publish them, I’d need Dylan’s permission, as the copyright holder of the original work.

Talk to Dylan’s Foundation. They are AFAIK usually very helpful – for example, here in Serbia and Montenegro they gave a permission to Dejan Cukic to translate Dylan’s songs and to sing them using Dylan’s chords – free of charge.

Wow, this is a mightly long list of comments. The world is burning! Quick, head for the ships!
Well my opinion on the matter is that the legality of their stance is unfounded….a lot of Dylan’s music wouldn’t even EXIST if it wasn’t for appropriating other people’s intellectual propertly. And I believe that the work becomes public domain after 50 or 100 years? I do not know the facts there, though, but according to the first rule of their statement I am not allowed to cover songs by other artists at the local coffeehouses or else…..someone call Homeland Security!
But the only thing I wanted to say was this: Eyolf has provided an enormous catalogue for us for many years, completely invaluable and well crafted. But, as one of my older friends once commented, tabs have ruined guitarists for a while now. The days when you put the album on and sat there and figured it out for yourself are past, and as a result we become less trained as guitarists and lazy by the dozen. I know my first instict is to google a song rather than take the time to labour over it.
Another thing for myself, due to Dylan’s common use of capo and C shape voicings, I have become too accustomed to playing in certain keys and shapes. This is because I play so much Dylan, and Eyolf puts it in the most convenient position. But, when I listen to some old jazz tunes and sit there and try to pick out those chords, I am way prouder of myself when I succeed and given to try more! Now we can all enjoy that warm fuzzy feeling when you figure out for yourself that well loved Dylan tune you always wanted to play but never could!

Just as everyone else here, i love this site and i have surely learned a lot from it. But i just have a question: Do you really take their threats so seriously? I think you have done a tremendous job so far, but with all due respect, i think that you are acting a bit cowardly. They’re not going to put you in jail or make you pay fines. Maybe they’ll write you an angry e-mail (which they probably won’t). If anyone gets sued at all, it’s gonna be sites like guitaretab, azchords and such. And if you DO get busted, we will all chip in to pay the fines. Ok?

Your site is amazing. I am very disappointed to see it put on hiatus. Not only is this a site to help fellow musicians, but it really shows the love people have of Bob Dylan. You don’t have stupid advertisements all over the screen and have devoted the site entirely to his music. If they say you doing this is a crime, I say they are the ones doing the crime to you. I can only imagine how much time and effort you put into this and its a shame to see it go to waste because of egotistical musicians that cry about the money they don’t need. You bring up some interesting questions, which I’ll try to answer.
I don’t necessarily take the threats seriously, so much as the issues involved. The bottom line is: I want the site to be fully legit, which, at the present (or rather: the past) it isn’t (/wasn’t).
Well, how do you know that? I know of others who have had more unpleasant experiences than just an angry email. That’s enough for me to treat this with some caution.

I think your fears are largely unfounded. We all know the bottom line: money. Are you making or taking money that is rightfully his? Of course not. Can not your free distribution of his songs’ lyrics and/or chords/tabs be construed as advertising Bob Dylan’s music for free? If anyone *should* pay (but I maintain that no one should, or will ever have to), it would be Bob Dylan compensating your for your tireless effort to spread his music throughout the cosmos! What you are doing is making *more* money for Dylan! There is no way you would be found guilty. Only if you were receiving money for distributing his tabs would there ever be a winnable case against you. You worry too much; yeah, Dylan wants your money. Right. I owned a website called memofromturner.net (from The Stones’ Memo From Turner), and the “memofromturner” logo I designed had the Stones Tongue in it. Same thing: Sure, the Stones wanna sue me. We share a great love for Bob Dylan’s music and when I picked up the guitar a couple years ago- I really would not have learned the little I know if it were not for your site. It’s simply an amazing and complete resource, and everything you say in your blog and news updates is just very refreshing- you have a great perspective on Dylan and his music, something that is hard to come by these days. I am not sure I have understood the situation, but is it clear that the problem reduces to ask Dylan’s permission? I am not sure this is the case, I think Dylan has a certain amount of decisional power on this matter, but for sure also Columbia or whoever Dylan has sold the rights for publishing transcriptions of his music should give its permission…
Anyway it is a pity the site is down, but I agree with Eyolf that there is nothing else to do without taking risks.

I just found out about this and it is very upsetting – but not unexpected. This is copyright gone crazy and there’s probably nothing you’ll (or any of us) be able to do. We jsut have to be smarter. This is just a bunch of f…ing a…holes trying to cash in on music that they have cashed in many times over and still want more. Greed and more greed.
A way round this may be to ask several people to host dylanchords on their own server or the zip file with you publishing the links on your site. You would anly neeed to provide a page where the fans could insert the URL where the zip file can be found or dylachords site is (a moving target for MPA – could be some spamming problem but I’m sure this can be overcome).
Can you send me the zip file.
Also, do you have a donation page where dylachords fan could donate some money for you to get some legal advice.

So sad…. I have spent hours on this site and have actually bought 3 Dylan records since I discovered it. I think it is a shame to remove tabulature sites, because they encourage the purchase of albums, at least in my case. Your unique comprehensive collection of songs makes me want to buy more and more albums so I can learn all the particular arrangements that can only be found on records that you have to purchase. I would absolutely love the zip file, but I understand the number of requests you have had. Hopefully the knowledge that I gained from the time I spent here will give me the ability to learn the songs more easily by ear. I can’t proffer much in the way of legal advice. However, a Dylan quote from 1962 seems apt:
“The songs are just there. They exist by themselves, just waiting for someone to write them down. If I don’t do it, someone else would”

I agree with the many comments posted above, I have found this site to be highly educational and a good way to spend many hours learning great songs. By learning these songs and increasing my exposure to them I have ended up buying quite a few Dylan albums and getting others hooked on them as well. This whole damn thing is so stupid and in fact ruined my mood for the evening.
Read once again: Mr Keiser said he did not just want to shut websites and impose fines, saying if authorities can “throw in some jail time I think we’ll be a little more effective”.
Well Mr Keiser you, and the music publishing business have for ever lost my respect. I think there is a great difference between Am G F E and a complete score, which in turn is only some other kind of transcription, only more elaborate. And who benefits the most from the sales of sheet music? I think it’s the publishing company, not the artist.
Aargh I’m so mad I can’t think straight.
I’d love to give shelter to dylanchords if I had the means and I do hope you will find a way go get back on track.

Your explanations have helped me to understand music to an exponentially greater degree and I know from reading all the comments that I’m not alone. I understand your concern and think it is totally founded, but I also understand everyone else’s side in that your fears may be for nothing, though it would be risky to put the stuff back up. So what do we do now?
Well, I think a good answer to that question would be to ask Bob or a representative of his for permission. So he’s having an XM show? Someone needs to call him up. It doesn’t matter how, just get in contact with someone. It may be tough or it may take a while, but no action gets you nowhere. Just imagine it, being able to proclaim your website is under the protection of Bob Dylan.

I have discovered this site couple of weeks ago and I have been using it to play Dylan’s songs ever since. And I was very upset to find out that you had to take most of the Dylan’s chords and lyrics off your web. I hope that may be you can send me a copy of the zip files.

This website was the first bookmarked site on my browser. The body of work contained on it is/was invaluable to those attempting to learn some of the most beautiful songs ever written. As far as a copyright infringement goes, I think that case remains to be made logically. However, Eyolf, I thank you for your amazing contribution Bob Dylan fans, as well as musicians, everywhere. Given the context, I still found it exciting to read and feel the global outrage in taking down what should be viewed as a public service. Dylanchords was a true masterpeice, and I hope that it returns soon.

It is so sad that such a great site should cease to exist, and I just want to thank you for the hours of enjoyment I’ve gotten out of playing your wonderful simple, yet accurate interpretations of the songs. I think this site does nothing more than honor Dylan and mostly likely encourage people buy more Dylan. It has be my personal experience that playing Dylan on my own has only caused me to gain a greater appreciation of his music, and has caused me to purchase so many albums in a short period of time that I don’t have much money to spend on anything else.
This is just another case of the music industry going after the wrong people. Anyone dedicated enough to take time to learn Dylan’s songs, has probably spent enough money to more than take care of the artist. When will the music industry realize that it is biting the hand that feeds, when it applies copyright protection to cd’s and attacks great people like yourself?

Now, get a canadian (.ca) website and the legal issues can be expunged. Canada, strangely enough, allows people to freely listen to music and write what you hear…and they are cheap!!

I’m 54 and haven’t played a guitar in 30 years. Just went out and treated myself to a sweet hollow body electric guitar, and since I’ve fallen back in love with Bob’s work, I was overjoyed to find this site. You have (had) done a great service, and I was just starting to enjoy it all. Three days later it’s down. Damn!

This is just terrible, this is by far the most comprehensive Dylan tab site, and by far has the most accurate tabs. The record company wants to be able to have sole access to Dylans song trascriptions. Perfect example of the evils of capitalism. People won’t stand for this. Cheer up, folks. I have no idea of knowing for sure, but I’d almost bet that enough noise has been made about this that Dylan’s people are aware of the situation. And as Eyolf pointed out earlier, it’s not Bob or his organization who are behind this. I’m sure all of our hopes are that dylanchords gets legitimized and will be back up in due time. In the meantime, I share in all of the grateful sentiments to Eyolf for his labor of love here these past years. He is a humble, self-depricating man to which we all owe an extreme debt of gratitude.

I’m 51 years old and first heard Bob’s music in the summer of 1968 when I was 13. It’s been a very imprtant part of my life. I picked up the guitar a few months later and tho I play badly I find that singing the songs gives you a diffferent, and in some ways, more intimate experience of them. I remember the excitment I felt when I bought my first chord book in 1969 or so and thnking “what is this shit?” when I found many of the songs in unplayable e flat minor. I figure the MPA owes ME money when you figure the interest on that original $5 piece of crap. IF they would actually bother to put out a songbook that we could use, we might be willing to pay for it.

I’m a real dylan fan and when i started to play guitar i bought a dylan tab book. i was a beginner but o tought the trancription was awfull. When i discovered this site it was a real pleasure. I just recently came across this site when I was looking for some Dylan music to play. It was just days ago that I was learning to play “Maggies Farm” which is my absolute favorite Dylan song. I am outraged that you took the chords and tabs off of the website. This isnt some ilegal music downloading site. It is simply a way for the artist to reach out to the listner by way of learning the music which is the best way. Since learning more of Bob Dylan’s songs, I have become more of a Dylan fan than before. My big regret is that I just found out about this site a few weeks ago and didn’t get to finish learning the songs I wanted to. This is truly a disappointment.

I really hope they aren’t taken down. Most tablature for any musician in almost all the music books I’ve read and online are usually very very off. But you come so close or exactly to what I hear bob play. Another thing is Dylan himself was a “stealer of music” listening to records and learning to play those songs. I’m sure he believes in sharing music in the sense that other people can learn to play songs that aren’t theirs. I just don’t understand how people can try and do illegal things by knowing a song. Its not like they can say oh I made this song times are a changing like people will believe. whatever I strongly hope that your not shut down. keep fighting for the little people. Yours sincerely.

Fuc… Shame! Iam from the Netherlands and saw Bob’s first stadiumconcert in The Netherlands in 1978. After that I saw him about 200 times from Holland to New york, Woodstock and so on. Iam playing his song over more than 30 years and discoverde your site a while ago. I was teaching myself specialy the basement tapes songs, because the way you find out the lyrics & chords are very impressive. Iam not a laywer but hope you will find a way to solve this mayor problem. Hopefully a laywer fan can help you. I red some comments from this kind of fans. I think there is hope aon the horizon. Just had a thought, as it’s the American Music Publishers’ Association that is kicking up a fuss, could you not just put the songs back on but put a note on the site saying that if you are in America, it is illegal to view the files? If you’re hosting the site from Norway, they can’t arrest you or fine you from America, because you’re not breaking Norwegian law. If the Government of Norway deems it illegal to host the site, then you’d really have to take it down, otherwise I don’t see why you should.

I that your work on this site falls into a gray area because you are not publishing these works in any format to make a profit.
You are simply making available to the public your intrepretation of how certain Dylan songs are played.
I have a few friends that are lawyers, and rest assurred that this situation will be brought to their attention, and I will pass on any advice or information I receive.
This sire has been a great educational tool for me over the past 2 years, and I would hate to see it shut-down. The greater tragedy, however, would be if you were to face legal action personally.
It would be great if you put up the zip file on the site for a week or so to let us all get at it… or start it as a bit.torrent and give us the information on how to find it.

Well, that’s shocking! Haven’t been here for a while and now I have to see this. Absolutely unbelievable. There’s a lover of Dylan’s music, spending hours and hours to support his favourite musician, to help players all around the world and so on and some fuckin’ businessmen let it dissappear for no reason, imo. Will they earn more money without that site? No! Will they protect or help the artist with their reaction? No! All they say – as I see it – is “we can have the site shut down, so we do”. Jeeeze, what a bunch of wankers.
I absolutely love this site and I want it back soon. I – of course – signed the petition and I hope that petition can and will change the status quo.
However, Eyolf, thanxalot for helping me in so many ways during the last years by giving us all this wonderful site. You did a GREAT job! May you be allowed to bring it up again.

Man this site is cool! We all can talk about this and that, ultimately you make the choice! Is the creator of this site as guilty as the viewers and if so is that right? Of course its not! Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t it Dylan who said the songs were always there, I just found them or something along those lines. The songs are great and it’s in everyone’s best interest to keep them alive. Apart from the recorded song, viewers of this site and others are helping to keep these songs alive for future generations! This is a none profitable website in terms of money. Before recordings etc songs were passed down through the generations and changed overtime, this site keeps one artists music alive! And surely Bobby and everyone else wants that!
I wish you luck getting the site back to the way it should be, I miss it!

Being 17 all I ever hear my friends play is that power chord crap (greenday, etc.)or the beatles and it sucks because I have no way of learning Dylan other than your site, and now thats it’s down all that’s left is unreliable tab sites(thank you capitalism). So I’d greatly appreciate it if you didn’t give up. You helped a young person discover Dylan, that can’t be a bad thing.

I was very sad when i checked in to this site the other day because i had just got hold of some of the few dylan recordings i still haven`t listened to( actually “a fool such as i”)and i mostly needed the lyrics since the chords for those beatiful country songs aren`t very difficult, anyway, thanks a lot for the “love and theft”-tabbing, i`ve been longing for them forever and was euforic about for example “moonlight” wich i had worked out myself (in A)but for the missing pieces you helped to fill in.It has an interesting chromatic use of dim-chords very much similar to what i found in Fats Wallers “ain`t misbehavin`” and the lyrics, i think, is also in the same mood. Anyway, thanks and i hope it all works out, this site has brought me a lot of joy.

It makes me really sad that MPA wants to discourage people from learning music. Its a disgusting thought to me that the music industry now obviously cares about its profits much more than the future musicians of the world. I think that this sort of anti social behavior will lead to the eventual downfall of the modern major label music industry. It makes me sick.

This was the best Dylan site I have found yet to date. No where I have found has his whole first cd tabbed out. My goal was to learn his whole first cd, but now I dont know where to find the songs. Even if I did find them the quality and accuracy of the transcription porobably would not be as goo. I hope this site will be back on some day I still have songs left to learn.

Because of your site I have purchased 23 Dylan CDs in the last year (ouch)! The only reason I decide to purchase one is that I see an interesting song (or version) in tab format, usually here at DylanChords. I then listen to the first 30 seconds at BobDylan.com, if I like it and want to play it, I purchase the CD so that I can listen and learn the entire song. Without the tabs I would never have became interested in the music (and made no CD purchases). I have also purchased a Dylan tab book with over 300 Dylan tabs in it, however the quality was generally poor.
My interest level in buying more CDs was very high but has dropped to minus zero as a result of the tab site issues (in particular with DylanChords.com), I don’t just want to listen to the music, I want to try playing it, the tab sites give me that basic opportunity, saving hours of time. I guess I will just have to spend the time myself…should be fun anyway…of course time is the big issue.
I really hope yours site comes back. Obviously a labor of love….beautiful work Eyolf .

I agree, anyone who has studied music knows the underlying rhythm and modality of a work can be harmonized ad infinitum, and can be elastic, limited only by the ear, skills and abilities of the composer. You could come up with arrangements which do not even resemble the original score and never entered the mind of the creator. Thus, arrangements can be subject to intellectual property rights

I can honestly say that I have learned so much from this site about dylan as well as the depths of his songs. Nothing peels Dylan deeper than trying to replicate that sound. This has been such a wonderfully useful site for me a musician as well as a writer.

Desolation Row is about Nazi’s? Take some time off and travel to Greenich Village in New York where I live. Selling Postcards of hangings was done in the American West in the 1800′s. In 1965, the year of the song, US Congress past immigration Law to concentrate on this hemishere instead of Europe, brown being skin color. Beauty Parlor filled with sailors, can you say Gay in Greenich Village. And on and on it goes. And the last verse says, ah forget it, same old same old. My advice is to try and put song in his reality in New York City, not what you want it to be.

Well, Perhaps if or when you complete some songs, then you can decide how any part of your music gets dispersed. Don’t like paying musicians for a Tab book that teachs you guitar. Well, Don’t buy it, don’t expect it for free tho, or you can write a tab book with your songs in em and you can read that for free….did you dentist fix your teeth for free, come on man, musicians dont get what they’re worth….go buy Bob Dylan Tabs…. amazon.com

I am a hobby musician who has “greatly” improved my own ability to play by learning from the various tab sites on the Internet: it’s a travesty to ban such sites. Surely they are just an extension of a physical room in which musicians sit together and show each other chords and licks to songs they love and want to play. Will THEY stop that happening one day too?? My thanks to all those wonderful people out there willing to share their talent with the less-talented like myself – cheers!

This is awful news. Eyolf, your site has been, is, and I hope will continue to be a fantastic achievement and resource. Your Tabs are amazingly perceptive and greatly illuminate the songs. Speaking as someone who spent much of 1965 listening to the intro to ‘Don’t think twice’ at 16rpm, I can’t tell you what an amazing discovery dylanchords was after 35 years of partially successful effort! Doesn’t stop me buying the cds and listening to them over and over again, and the site doesn’t stop the people who really matter earning all the money they need.

I hope sense will prevail and you shall be free. I can’t think that the man who owns the copyright, and who has been outrageously loving and thieving songs from and for all of us for over 40 years, would object for a moment.

LETTER TO BOB
If ever there was a time for Bob himself to say or do something in support, this is it.
I have introduced so many young guitarists to this site, who have then gone on to include Bob’s music in their must be learned songs.
No one gets ripped off in this site, least of all Bob himself. Bought sheet music is often badly tabbed, piano orientated, and often downright misleading.
Jeez, even Bob himself doesn’t play in the same style.
That thin wild mercury is all wrappped up in these interpretative tabs…C’mon Bob, you have already said “these bootleggers make some pretty good stuff “….take a lead and incorporate Dylanchords in your official site, show a finger to the establishment that often did you no favours and recognise the true appreciative audience of your wonderful music, unrepresented by the sterile music industry.

Dear Eylof, I just became aware of this site a few weeks ago, and want to thank you for helping out so many musicians and music lovers with it. I just got an acoutic guitar after not playing for many years, and was looking forward to learning from you, and then I see nothing is available anymore ?!?!? This was a shock to me. Im so sorry I didnt take advantage to download stuff when it was all there. Since when have music companies been concerend about fair compensation to their artists ??? Pete Ham and Tom Evans from Badfinger both hanged themselves to death because they were treated in such an unsrupulous way by their “well-meaning” business managers. Whatever comes of all of this, “thank you!” This has been an incredible academic and musical resource, and I hope it is allowed to expand and grow without such irrational boundaries. Anyone who argues that the existence of this site hurts either the record companies or Dylan himself is an imbecile. I have bought 15 or so Dylan albums in the last year, in part because of this site; I would not buy authorized Dylan transcriptions anyway because it seems sacrilegious to me; it seems this site serves to promote Dylan’s music and in turn, helps the record companies who distribute it. Enough about that though…really I just wanted to say “thank you.”

New Year 2005 myself and other musicians from the north east of England (some of whom had even shared a stage with the man himself) held a “Dylan Day” and raised a great deal of doe for a newcastle neurosurgical unit.
The concept was simple, provide a great house band and invite all and sundry to front it and perform a Dylan song – from 3pm till midnight and NO repeats. Dylanchords was the standard backing sheet for each number.
Some of the performers were in their teens some in their sixties but all had love and respect for Dylan’s music which is only enhanced by your superbly scholarly site.
Music publishers just don’t get it,you might as well talk about closeing public libraries.
I hope sense prevails (and would very much appreciate the zip file)

What a shame for the chords to longer be available to amateurs like myself who benefit so much from the sites that put the chords to the songs on line. Books are wildly over priced and I can’t tell you how much I’ve been able to learn as far as playing from sites like this. What a bummer. I hope someone thinks of a way to get around this.

There are not too many Dylan song books out there and your site had most of the songs he ever recorded including the bootleg series which are some early songs that are not on any other records that I would like to learn.

During this winter break from school I bought Nasville Skyline and was eager to check out your tabs on it as I have with every other Dylan record I’ve gotten. That’s when I saw that you have removed your tabs.
With that being said, I would like to thank you for all of the work you have done making this site up until now. As a few people have said before, I too credit this site in helping me develop into the guitar/harp player that I am now. It is a shame, but rest assured that all your hard work was not wasted. The tabs are accurate and are playing in their very own division compared to other sites. As a true Dylan fan it’s really hurting that commercial fools and capitalistic money makers are trying to stop us from playing his songs for their own gain. Well… enough about that I guess.

First of all, I’d like to thank you SO MUCH for all the time & effort you’ve put into this site over the years. YOU TAUGHT ME HOW TO PLAY GUITAR!Again, thank you so much!!
Next I’d like point out the fact that as an Artist, I can assure you that your interpretation of any song in the world is MOST CERTAINLY your own intellectual property, of which you are the sole owner. Copyright infringement only occurs when/IF an Artist attempts to market their interpretation of another Artist’s copyrighted material.
Next I’d like to point out the fact that many members of the music publishers association FALSELY claim rights to songs that are in fact PUBLIC DOMAIN, ie man of constant sorrow, house of the rising sun, little maggie, silver dagger, fennario, the list goes on & on.
In any event, I can’t help but wonder if certain artists aren’t in fact cutting off the nose to spite the face, as far as “reigning in their fans”. At this point, I wouldn’t go to a grateful dead show if somebody offered to pay me. I am SO pissed!
Ok, well anyway, I hate to end what was intended to be a nice thank you on a negative note, so again, THANK YOU SO MUCH for teaching me to play guitar! I feel terribly indebted to you. I only wish I’d have taken the time to write earlier.

This is the best site, bar none, for anyone interested in Bob Dylan and his music. Eyolf’s work is amazing in its detail and there isn’t a music publisher in the whole world who can come close to his attention to detail, and his obvious devotion. I put up a link on my site to dylanschords.com and have told so many people about it, that I’m sure Dylan’s music is being discovered and redisovered all over the world because of Eyolf’s work. And I’m quite sure sales are doing just great.

I am so sorry to find that you have taken down big parts of the site. I am an fourteen year old girl from Norway and quite few of my friends has decent knowledge of Dylan’s work. It has been a great relief and joy to find tabs for all of my favourite songs here.
Knowing I’m able to find his lyrics on bobdylan.com it is still much more fun when I’m able to play along. My viewpoint stands not alone. It’s a great site you’re distributing and it would be sad to have lost it. Keep going. And know that someone cares for and apreciates what you’ve done. Again I know I’m not alone. Dear Eyolf,
I’ve read all the above, and realise that this has been said many times over, but I just felt I had to say something in support. I’ve been visiting your site for several years, and I’ve very much appreciated the efforts you’ve put into creating it – not just the tabs, but all the other good stuff that’s helped both my guitar playing and my enjoyment of Bob’s music.
I’m 56, first got into Dylan when I was 16 – maybe I’ll do a 40th anniversary concert featuring the songs I’ve learnt from you!!!. I’ve got all his albums, saw him at the Isle of Wight in 1969, and in Manchester this year.
I’ve seen a few helpful suggestions in the comments above (e.g. ask Bob’s permission, register the site in a country where it’s legit) – might be worth putting something on here to say what you’ve considered, and what the outcome was. If nothing else, it might stop your fans repeating the same things – although maybe not, given the number of people that are still asking you to send them a zip file, without bothering to read through the comments!
Anyway, I wish you every success, and hope to see your site restored to its former glories before too long.

One thing I’d like to add – isn’t folk music all about the handing down of songs from one generation to another? I admit, we live in a different world now and aren’t all singing and playing and learning songs with our families, but this was (in a way) a continuation of this tradition – learning from others and passing the songs along. I’m sad and angered to witness any effort too squash this tradtion and to discourage this heritage. And alhtough Dylan is not at risk for seeing his songs die, performing is what keeps songs alive. I think the American Music Publishers Association is bullshit! A guitar tab site is not taking any money from anybody. Like someone else said they bought a few records because of it. Putting tabs on the internet is nothing like bootlegging music, all the songs are copyrighted in the first place. This sort of thing just enrages me. Greedy suits trying to destroy anything they can’t make a dollar on. It absolutly does NOT hurt the artist. It helps them. I really hope you will be able to put this great site back up in its entirty.

I was just a “Greatest Hits” fan until I visited this site and was inspired to round out my exposure to Dylan’s music. That has involved spending quite a bit of money on CD’s but I guess the peddler’s of inaccurate tab books don’t care about that. Yet another request for the Zip file.

I’m 37. When I was in my late teens and early twenties I was obsessed by music but grew ever more cynical about the industry as I grew older. I stopped buying records altogether by the time I was 25 because most of the music I came across was rubbish.
7 years ago (when I was 30) I got broadband internet and discovered Napster. First I started downloading old tunes I’d heard from my childhood. I came across loads of fantastic country, bluegrass and folk music by accident. This led to the discovery of many artists that just don’t have an outlet for their music on the radio in the UK.
Since this rediscovery of music via the mp3 revolution started I have purchased more legitimate music cd’s than ever – i now spend a fortune on the damn things. The difference is now I buy exactly the music I like from Amazon or iTunes and not whatever the record companies think I ought to like and can be bothered to stock my local CD store with.
The parallel with the Tab sites is uncanny. Do they really think people buy less Bob Dylan records and merchandise because of your site?
I agree with much of what has been written. I definately think you should ask Bob what he thinks.
Lastly, like everyone else I thought the site would be around forever but it seems, as with altcountrytab.com I’ll have to plead with you for the zip file and if there is anything a web developer from Sussex, UK can do to help then please let me know.

Im 22 and am learning to play guitar, used to search this site for easyish songs, but now I can finally play an F chord, im back for more, but they have gone! This is an absolute disgrace – how can people think that educating others is a criminal offence. Like you said – number 1. these are your own interpretations and therefore the copyright material does indeed belong to yourself, and number 2. theres no ground for criminal prosecution. These are the greedy record companies who are simply after their fat pay cheques! Everyone has the right to play their favourite dylan song on guitar! Good Luck and all the best!

Just want to say how great this site was (and hopefully will be again). Any time I felt like strumming a Dylan song on guitar, this was the place I’d come (not good enough to play any of the songs from memory!) and I’ve spent many hours using these tabs to play along to Dylan’s CDs. Anybody that thinks this site will affect music record sales is a fool, in fact as many people have already said it almost certainly does the opposite. I seriously wonder how Dylan feels about this whole thing. I would like to think if (and when) he hears about it he will do what he can to help get this site back up and running – surely he knows the importance of music being shared and played and loved by others. After all, he started off as a someone playing covers of old folk songs. Hope to see the site back up + running soon!

It’s such a tradgedy.
I’ve practically learned how to play guitar from your site Eyolf! From the first simple stuff like Loansome Death, to fingerpicking Don’t think Twice (which incidently was the only reason i wanted to play guitar, to play hat song, and you made it easy in a few months).
I owe you so so much.

Hi! First I want to thank you for a great site! When I saw that the tab section was shut down I was really devistated and I hope you’ll find a sollution. Have you seen springsteen-chords.com? They have something called Creative commons-license maybe that something you could get too? You should check into it at least.. Good luck!

Hi, Eyolf. Just clicked over to the site for another dose of Dylan, saw it is down, read your explanation and have been reading thses comments. As we say in Wisconsin (USA) “Uffda.”
Your site is/was the best Dylan site on the ‘net. Your chord arrangements were by far the best available — for free or for money. Right now, there is a huge, fat Bob Dylan song book down at my local public library. It has virtually all the Dylan songs in it, chords and lyrics. But I came HERE, because your chords were better. And your comments and analysis helped me understand and appreciate Dylan and his music more.
By the way, according to your posting of the Australian copyright people, I can’t “perform it in public.” So — No singing of the songs in public? I can’t play Blowing in the Wind in a coffeehouse, or play Like a Rolling Stone at the local bar with my band?
You know, they that that “those whom the Gods would destroy, they first make mad.” I think the greed of the music industry is causing them to lose their basic good sense. They are trying to prevent people from using and participating in their culture. If they persist, people will simply replace commercial music in the culture with something else, because people WILL NOT agree to give up their culture to others.
If we can’t play and sing the songs distributed by the music industry, we will sing and play what we CAN sing and play. Simple. That is not a threat, it is a description of human nature!
I won’t ask for the zip file. I will say, rather, that I’ve enjoyed your site hugely and I thank you for it. You did wonderful work. I often checked your site simply to determine if Dylan wrote a particular song or if he covered it, or if it was traditional.
Enough. I’ve been brought closer to Dylan’s work by your work — thank you.

Thank you for building up this site. It is the best Dylan’s site around, and made rediscover the lost passion of guitar playing. It will be a huge loss to see it fade away..
Have you thought of writing to Dylan’s himself (his office)about half-cracked prejudice that leaped forth and forced you to take the site down?

g’day mate. i’ve just come back from 9 months in Romania where i was learning some of their traditional music, and was keen once i arrived back home in oz to hit the road again playing some dylan stuff as well. i’ve always used the sight which was great and was stunned to see it gone. i’d love a version of the zip if possible, just so i can spread more of the dylan gospel.

Clearly it would be difficult for me to add anything much new to the comments at this stage.
I would, therefore like to say a big thanks to you for the huge ammount of time and effort that you must have put into this site and how much I’ve enjoyed visiting it and watching it grow – and not only the tabs, I’ve enjoyed the other essays like ‘Dylan’s Guitars’.
I’ve been a Dylan fan since I was 12 in 1965 and I love to pick up a guitar and delve into his massive catalogue of songs.
I’m afraid it looks like what we have here is a classic case of little guy vs the huge corporation and unfortunately, despite what we see in the movies, the little guy seldom if ever wins.
I think it’s a great shame, particularly after a year of more openess and access from Dylan than I’ve ever known.
If there is a zip fo the tabs, I would love to receive it.

Too sad we can not consult this site the way we used to. It was so much fun to use. It clearly helped understanding Dylan’s art, whether as a guitar player or a music lover. If I can reveive the zip file, I would greatly appreciate.

This is by far one of my favorite sites I have ever visited. I was extrememly sad to learn that the site’s tabulature section had to be closed down. I went away for a trip and then came back and the site was gone… its very stupid that you would have to shut down a pefectly legal site for this reason. This site the the BEST – and the ONLY source for all practical purposes for accurate and informative dylan tab – and loads of other information. I’ve depended on it over the years and wouldn’t be enjoying playing the music as much as I am. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve tried to figure something out with some other crappy source only to find it here and say “yes – that’s how he does it!”. I sure would appreciate the zipped file so I can keep this going. They don’t want us to learn and sing his songs? Isn’t that what it’s all about?

I am deeply saddened by this news. As it was for many, I too was inspired by Dylan to learn guitar. I worked hours every day, listening to recordings and looking up every song on every album I owned on this very site. It was you, Eyolf, who helped me to become a decent guitarist. It was this site that encouraged me to buy the very albums they wish to protect. I tell you this, without this site I would not be where I am today.
Using the tabs on dylanchords my friends and I would go busking in downtown Iowa City (USA) playing every song we knew from Leadbelly to Guthrie to Bob himself. Sure we didn’t make much, but the experiences and friendships formed were worth every hoarse voice or numb finger. I recall when I found a bunch of bootlegs my father had stored away and found the tabs to them here on the site. The sheer joy at being able to exactly replicate the sound of his voice or the licks on the guitar brought me lasting satisfaction. Using the simple chord structures laid down by generations past I began to write my own things, beginning with “Song to Bob” a tribute much like his first.
The MPA has a legal claim to do what they have done. I am deeply sorrowful that this has come to pass. I feel in my heart that you have done a great service to this world Eyolf, but I am torn. I also understand the value of copyright. I know how much intellectual property means to a writer. I am sorry I haven’t got anything else to say, just that I know that Bob wouldn’t give a damn about any of it. He realized he could become greater than Woody, he used him as long as he needed and when he moved on he thanked him in a song. If anyone wants to be stuck playing covers of Dylan their whole lives, go ahead, I say, it won’t get you as far as you need to go.

this is adamn shame i’ve spent hours upon hours learning songs on this site. me a friend used to compare which sounded better this sites or the official chord charts and this sites always sounded better.

For the past year or so, I have been a regular visitor to this site and have learned a great deal. I have also recommended this site to a few of my friends who were also learning to play guitar. This site was by far the most comprehensive collection of songs (that was) on the net. Thank you Eyolf for sharing your wealth of knowledge with us for so long and hope for the best in the future.

Thanks Eyolf, your site has always been excellent, and very helpful when it comes to checking my own transcriptions. I wish the music industry would return to supporting great artists and publishing interesting music, like they once did, rather than taking legal action against tab sites.

I’m so sorry that you’ve had to pull the tabs. You deserve a lot of credit for all the work that you’ve done to let us accurately reproduce BD’s unique guitar style.
If the record industry really wants to shut you down,they are not only morally wrong, they are hurting themselves financially. I suspect I’m not the only one to buy a BD CD after learning a song on your site!
Good luck getting the tabs back on line. Maybe BD will intervene. (Maybe not.)

Now who was it who said “Money doesn’t talk, it swears”??!?!? Which is the bigger crime – ripping musicians off by selling music scores and books that are just plain wrong or providing accurate chords, tunings and transcriptions for musicians enjoyment? I’ve learnt so much from this site and it has greatly contributed to my musical abilities. Where else (ie books) do you find accurate transcriptions of Blood On The Tracks songs? Nowhere.

I really feel that this site is the only one on the internet that had really good and accurate tabs of bob dylan’s music. Since there are many other sites wich carry much more material than this site did and are still active. I really hope that you will make these tab’s awailable again as soon as possible.

this sucks. all day at work i was waiting for 5 so i could come home and learn as much of another side of; as i possibly could. there goes my evening. it really sucks your tabs are gone. especially considering all my dylan books are pretty wrong. i couldn’t even imagine dylan beginning to care that his tabs are on the net.

I signed the petition. I humbly think that these legislators are ignorant. They don´t have an idea of what rock music is, they ignore the specificity of it. They seem to ignore that it always has been a popular music, and that is only commercial, obviously if they want to sell some object. The interpretations of music, and tabs are really interpretations, do not steal any element of that physic object that carries the musical product. It is obvious that they are unfamiliar with the reality of all this. I somewhat unwillingly admit that there is some manoeuvre of commercialism. If that is so, probably the best thing to do is to be idealistic, and fight on.

Thanks for the innumerable hours I spent on this site. You’ve brought me many good times and allowed me to play along with the songs I love. This is too sad. I would obviously also love to have a copy of the zip file, but I don’t know if you’re sending it. You did some amazing work and those of us less talented really appreciate it. Also, if anyone has received it and can forward it I would appreciate it and continue to spread it around. Thanks again for your efforts over the years.

i’m without words. this website was great. i improved my guitar skills, fingerpicking and stuff like that…i was going step by step to appreciate all the production of bob.
i’m italian. i just started working as a lawyer.
this situation is absolutely insane…there is no any reason to close this website. everything was here it came from your mind.
so…should they forbid also concert on dvd?….people might be able to see the left hand of the guitar player….and music sheets wouldn’t be sold.

i loved this site, it is the one and only site that i could referr to w/ complete confidence that the information would be 100% correct. Tis truly a sad situation, and I look forward to the day that my eyes may rest upon that mile long alphabetical list of all that is dylan. thank you for everything in the passed, and yes, we shall meet again.

Just wanted to thank eyolf for this outstanding site and all the work he put in to it; what little talents I have on the guitar I owe in large part to the fantastic transcriptions available here; there’s nothing more encouraging than learning from an accurate tab. This is one great loss of pleasure. I alsways enjoyed thinking of an old song or hearing an album and going to the dylanchords site. I have “official tab” books that are not even close. I could always hear the real thing on this site. I would love to be zipped, I would appreciate it. Hopefully that will capture alot of the info, but the changes that went with this site will be gone. I want to thank-you for all of your hard work and the years of pleasure this site has given me. Ken Roberts

I’ve enjoyed learning Dylan’s songs many times mainly from this site. Don’t think twice. Put the tabs back!

Its unbelievable but that was true for many other things that happened. Things on this matter seems to get worse. Will music (and other other intellectual stuff) really get ruled by money? Yes, more and more. There is an interesting argumentation for bootleg music that says: The artist has the right on the CD, but if he performs live, he transfers rights to the public, they paid and they heard it (will industry burn out their memories? They would if they only could!). Another approach may be something like open source, just search for “open source beer”. Anyway, something is happening: Music gets in the hand of marketing people and lawyers. There is no room for living this music by playing or understanding it, its just about consuming. No, wait, its just about paying.
Eyolf, you gave me insight in songs I would not have got and I thank you for that. And Bob Dylan may not take any notice of it, but as somebody above said: He would vote to keep this site up. Because he knows that music DIES when nobody plays it beside DRM-secured high-tech-players. Maybe the Basement Tapes need to come back – bringing back the music.

Just another Bob fan wanting to thank you for the site. The support shown here is really impressive. I had only just recently discovered it, and was enjoying your commentary in addition to the great tabs. Who knows where Dylan himself would stand on this issue – it seems he could learn a song the moment he heard it. Bottom line, I agree with the others who have commented that it makes him more money from increased interest in his music than it would ever cost him from lost sheet music sales. Until there’s some resolution, although I’m disappointed, I support your decision. Thanks again.

Thank you so much for your immense work and also for your great blog! Please hear what I have to say.
Being a great fan of Dylan and owning 50 records of him I knew this site for a while.
However I used to play saxophone and didn’t work with the chords so far I just got my hands on a guitar on christmas to even dive more into these great songs. My plan was to get back to this site and learn the songs one by one. But now..
Now I’ m feeling deeply sorry that you had to move away your chords. I understand why you took them down but still I regret this situation very much.

I have enjoyed your site for years. In fact one of my guitar instructors took a song from your site site published it for the class. Clearly giving you in writing credit for the words / music. Even did a further re – arrangement. Anyway, did you shut down the site with actual lyrics and music – I no longer can find it. Can you send me a zipped file if of your work ? I must say you were/are a god send to many Dylan followers who needed a little bit of help to get started. I hope your site gets reinstated, or you just post it under another domain.

I’ve been a Dylan fan since the 60′s and have found your chord charts to be a wonderful connection to Dylan’s music. I’ve found chords to bootleg versions that are not available in books. I hope you are able to get the chords online again soon, and would appreciate it if yo sent me the zip file.

This is probably the best tab site I’ve ever used. The site’s helped me so much over the years. With this site closing down and altcountrytab.com, it makes you wonder what all this copyright crap is about. They always wanna take it away from the music lovers.

I just got interested in Dylan one year ago, and this Web site alone cultivated my interest. I wonder how many years until Dylan songs just become part of the common canon and we can chuck all this copyright rubbish. To live outside the law one must be honest. Is anybody hearing that right now? I’d be honored and indebted if I could receive that zip file.

Hey Eyolf, the world keeps getting darker, and it’s getting there. You site was an oasis of light, I remember rainy days when I would pick up my guitar and pick one of Bobs songs on the site and everything would be easier after that, the rain seemed less annoying (I live in Vancouver BC by the way, there’s lots of it…) and the day would take me somewhere after all. Than…once again, some suits in tall buildings getting back at us for trying to see beyond this world full of lies…

i sent you some e-mails years and years ago about some dylan song information…(can’t remember what it was, now) anyway, i organize a yearly dylan tribute in ann arbor, MI, U.S.A. and I used to tell everyone who asked about this guy named eyolf who had this brilliant dylan site that had boat loads of information, and the tabs were always done very well. sorry to hear about this. you know, i just remembered…it was something about “Deep Elum”.
anyway…i, too would like the zip, if you’re not to burdened with requests.
i signed the petition, hope it does some good. it’s nice to see such an outpouring of kind words about your hard work. let me know if there’s anything else i can do.

I’m particularly interested in learning the fingerpicking styles of songs like Girl of the North Country or Boots of Spanish Leather (which we agree, are pretty much the same) or faster paced songs like Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right

I was shocked and saddened today when I came to your site to learn Visions of Johanna. This was the one place where a beginning acoustic guitarist like me could come and try to work out the mysterious songs of Bob Dylan and to learn a little bit about the man.
This place is much more then a “tab site.” I especially like all the background info on the songs and when they were recorded. You put alot of work into this site and I truly hope things work out for you and everybody who enjoys it. And of course I would love to have a Zip file if possible.

Probably a good thing for the moment, i can now try to work out songs for myself.however ur guidance was valuable, i know now he’s either capoed on the 2nd using G or the 4th using C lol most his songs are easy to find out this way i swear to god.

Your site helped me a lot, both in playing guitar and at the same time enjoying a close reading of BD’s lyrics, which are even more enjoyable to muse over in light of what I learned reading C. You sure have put a lot of hard work into these tabs to have this happen to you. I, as everyone else, was very disappointed to see the only great Dylan chord site gone the way of the dodo. These chords were an immense help to a beginning guitarist; I assume I’ll have to now find them elsewhere. Unless that zip file is floating around somewhere…

What in the hell is going on here?!?! I trying to learn how to play some Dylan songs (i mean realy play, not just the open chords!) and i happen on the best site i could ever hope for on dylan’s music. i mean, if you could find a site like this for all the old greats wouldnt you be more than thrilled? and then, right as i start playing, the rug gets ripped out and i find to my amazement, my absolute shock, that this person is getting in trouble for posting TABS!!! i mean, how in the world could tabs be infriging on copyrights?! at all?!! in even a samll way? i cant see how you might be profiting at all (at least monetarily speaking)…are you selling dylanchords tee-shirts or something? if that were the case i’d have two things to say: that still should’t be all that bad since othe tabs site do(how come they’re not getting busted?), and where can i get one?
but seriously, thanks for all the work you did do and if it ever comes back in the end i’ll be waiting. and thanks a bunch for all the uptight losers for ruining the show. jerks.

Hi everyone. I’ve been awaiting the return of the site for over a month now….doesn’t seem like it’s going to come back as easily as I thought. Anyways, I, like the rest of you am a musician and Dylan Freak that lived off of this site.
