{"id":37,"date":"2005-09-25T16:30:02","date_gmt":"2005-09-25T15:30:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/oestrem.com\/thingstwice\/?p=37"},"modified":"2005-10-26T02:30:09","modified_gmt":"2005-10-26T01:30:09","slug":"the-dylanchordscom-guide-how-to-use-word-without-hurting-heiners-eyes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oestrem.com\/thingstwice\/2005\/09\/the-dylanchordscom-guide-how-to-use-word-without-hurting-heiners-eyes\/","title":{"rendered":"The dylanchords.com guide: &#8220;How to use Word without hurting Heiner&#8217;s  eyes&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Upon <a href=\"https:\/\/oestrem.com\/thingstwice\/?p=36#comment-550\">general request<\/a>, here&#8217;s my guide to proper use of MS Word:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Never <em>ever <\/em>use direct formatting.<\/li>\n<li>That means: never <em>ever <\/em>click on any of the buttons in the formatting toolbar<\/li>\n<li>.&nbsp;.&nbsp;.&nbsp;which means that you might as well disable that toolbar altogether (right-click in the toolbar area and uncheck &#8220;Formatting&#8221;)<\/li>\n<li>You are allowed to keep it there for two reasons:\n<ol>\n<li>To control what is going on in the document, and<\/li>\n<li>to click on the &#8220;Styles&#8221; button (the one with the two &#8220;A&#8221;s), which opens the &#8220;Styles&#8221; sidebar,&nbsp;.&nbsp;.&nbsp;.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>.&nbsp;.&nbsp;.&nbsp;which should <em>always<\/em> be visible, and which is the <em>only<\/em> acceptable way to format the text.<\/li>\n<li>Create styles for the types of text that you are going to use, and\/or modify the existing styles to suit your desires.<\/li>\n<li>These desires should <em>under no circumstance<\/em> include using Times New Roman or Arial, which are Microsoft&#8217;s rip-offs of slightly more acceptable typefaces; but which in themselves are objectively ugly; and which give a discerning reader the impression that you don&#8217;t care how your document looks. Good alternatives are Garamond (which, in Microsoft&#8217;s version, is not a Garamond at all but a Jannon, but it comes close enough), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sil.org\/~gaultney\/gentium\/\">Gentium<\/a>, a nice, free unicode font (a combination of three huge advantages which are rarely seen together), or for that matter Book Antiqua, which is also a rip-off, but of a <em>nice <\/em>typeface: Hermann Zapf&#8217;s Palatino<\/li>\n<li>Use templates:\n<ul>\n<li> In an empty document, set up all the different styles that you think you will be using (plain text, indented text, blockquotes, headings, etc.), and save the document, not as a Word Document, but a Word Template (choose it in the drop-down list below the field for the file name).<\/li>\n<li>Choose New document from template from the Files menu and select your template.<\/li>\n<li>Lo and behold! All your styles are there.<\/li>\n<li>You can apply your new template to any document through the Functions > Templates menu.
